The verse is referenced in a discussion about the timing of Abraham's circumcision and its significance in the covenant with God.
📖 Sanhedrin 99b
Mentioned in the context of Abraham's righteousness and his fulfillment of God's commandments, including circumcision.
The Significance of Avraham's Age at Circumcision
According to Rashi (Bereishit 17:1), the Torah emphasizes Avraham's age of 99 to highlight that he was on the cusp of 100—a complete century—when he entered into the covenant of circumcision. This demonstrates that even at an advanced age, Avraham was willing to undergo physical change for the sake of his relationship with Hashem.
The Spiritual Transformation of Circumcision
The Rambam (Hilchot Milah 3:9) teaches that brit milah is not merely a physical act but a spiritual covenant that elevates a person's connection to Hashem. Avraham's circumcision at 99 symbolizes the completion of his spiritual journey, as he had already achieved great levels of righteousness (as seen in his earlier tests).
Numerical Significance in the Torah's Phrasing
The Covenant as a Completion of Avraham's Service
The Sforno comments that at age 99, Avraham had reached the pinnacle of his spiritual development through natural means. The brit milah represented a supernatural covenant—a divine seal on his lifelong dedication to spreading monotheism.
The Removal of the Orlah (Foreskin)
The Talmud (Nedarim 32a) teaches that the "orlah" represents spiritual blockage. By removing it at 99, Avraham demonstrated that even at an age when most people's character is fixed, one can still remove barriers to divine service. This sets a precedent for all future generations about the possibility of spiritual growth at any age.
