Parasha Commentary

Kalev's Exceptional Character

The verse (Bamidbar 14:24) highlights Kalev's unique spiritual qualities that distinguished him from the other spies. The phrase "רוּחַ אַחֶרֶת" ("another spirit") is interpreted by Rashi as meaning that Kalev possessed a different mindset from the other spies—one of faithfulness and courage. Unlike the others who succumbed to fear and slandered Eretz Yisrael, Kalev maintained his trust in Hashem.

The Meaning of "וַיְמַלֵּא אַחֲרָי"

The phrase "וַיְמַלֵּא אַחֲרָי" ("and followed Me fully") is expounded upon by the Ramban (Nachmanides), who explains that Kalev demonstrated complete devotion to Hashem's will. The Sforno adds that this means Kalev did not allow personal fears or calculations to override his faith, unlike the other spies who allowed their own reasoning to distort the truth.

Kalev's Reward

Hashem promises that Kalev will enter Eretz Yisrael and that his descendants will inherit it. The Midrash (Bamidbar Rabbah 16:10) teaches that Kalev's reward was not only for his personal righteousness but also for his role in silencing the people's rebellion when he declared, "עָלֹה נַעֲלֶה וְיָרַשְׁנוּ אֹתָהּ" ("We should go up and take possession of the land," Bamidbar 13:30). His steadfastness merited him a lasting portion in the land.

Contrast with the Other Spies

  • Rashi notes that while the other spies were influenced by the evil report, Kalev separated himself and sought guidance through prayer at the graves of the Avot in Chevron (Sotah 34b).
  • The Kli Yakar emphasizes that Kalev's "different spirit" was one of humility and submission to Hashem, unlike the arrogance of the other spies.

Legacy of Kalev

The Talmud (Sotah 11b) teaches that Kalev's wife, Miriam, and his descendants (such as Othniel ben Kenaz) were also righteous, demonstrating that his faithfulness extended to his household. This aligns with the verse's promise that "זַרְעוֹ יוֹרִשֶׁנָּה"—his offspring would inherit the land, indicating a lasting spiritual legacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does it mean that Kalev had 'another spirit' with him?
A: Rashi explains that 'another spirit' refers to Kalev's courage and faith in Hashem, which was different from the other spies who brought back a negative report about the Land of Israel. Unlike them, Kalev remained steadfast in his trust in G-d's promise.
Q: Why was Kalev rewarded with entering the Land of Israel?
A: Kalev was rewarded because he 'followed Hashem fully'—meaning he remained loyal to G-d despite the other spies' fear and rebellion. The Midrash (Sifrei) teaches that Kalev went to pray at the graves of the Patriarchs in Chevron to strengthen his resolve, showing his deep faith.
Q: What lesson can we learn from Kalev's example?
A: Kalev teaches us the importance of standing firm in our beliefs even when others doubt. The Rambam (Hilchot De'ot 1:4-6) emphasizes following the middle path of truth and courage, just as Kalev did by trusting in Hashem's promise despite the majority's opposition.
Q: How does Kalev's story apply to us today?
A: Like Kalev, we face challenges where we must choose between following popular opinion or staying true to Torah values. The Talmud (Sotah 34b) praises Kalev for his moral strength, reminding us that true success comes from trusting in Hashem and upholding our principles.
Q: What does it mean that Kalev's descendants would inherit the land?
A: This promise shows that faithfulness to Hashem brings lasting blessings. Rashi notes that Kalev's portion in the Land of Israel (including Chevron) was a reward for his loyalty, teaching that righteousness benefits not only the individual but also future generations (see Talmud, Sotah 11b).
