Parasha Commentary

Appointment of the Levites

The verse (Bamidbar 1:50) commands Moshe to appoint the Levites over the Mishkan (Tabernacle), its vessels, and all its belongings. Rashi explains that this appointment was a direct response to the sin of the Golden Calf, where the tribe of Levi distinguished themselves by remaining loyal to Hashem. As a reward, they were chosen for this sacred service instead of the firstborns, who originally held this role (Rashi on Bamidbar 1:50).

Responsibilities of the Levites

The Levites were entrusted with three primary duties:

  • Carrying the Mishkan: They were to dismantle, transport, and reassemble the Mishkan during the travels in the wilderness (Rambam, Hilchot Klei HaMikdash 3:1).
  • Guarding the Mishkan: They encamped around it to prevent unauthorized entry, as emphasized in the Talmud (Eruvin 105a).
  • Assisting the Kohanim: They served in auxiliary roles to the Kohanim, as detailed in Midrash Tanchuma (Bamidbar 6).

Symbolism of Their Encampment

The phrase "וְסָבִיב לַמִּשְׁכָּן יַחֲנוּ" ("they shall encamp around the Mishkan") highlights their role as protectors. The Sforno notes that their surrounding presence created a spiritual barrier, ensuring the sanctity of the Mishkan remained intact. This arrangement also reflected their elevated status as intermediaries between Bnei Yisrael and the Divine Presence (Sforno on Bamidbar 1:50).

Contrast with the Firstborns

The Ramban explains that the Levites replaced the firstborns because the latter forfeited their privilege through participation in the Golden Calf. The Levites' unwavering loyalty demonstrated their fitness for this sacred role (Ramban on Bamidbar 3:12). This transition underscores the principle that spiritual roles are earned through merit, not merely birthright.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the role of the Levites in this verse?
A: In this verse, the Levites are appointed to be in charge of the Mishkan (Tabernacle), its vessels, and all its belongings. Their responsibilities included carrying the Mishkan during travels, serving in it, and camping around it to protect and maintain its sanctity (Rashi on Numbers 1:50).
Q: Why were the Levites chosen for this special role?
A: The Levites were chosen because they demonstrated loyalty to Hashem during the incident of the Golden Calf (Shemot 32:26-29). Unlike the rest of Israel, they did not participate in the sin, and as a reward, they were given the privilege of serving in the Mishkan (Midrash Tanchuma, Bamidbar 3).
Q: What does it mean that the Levites camped around the Mishkan?
A: The Levites encamped around the Mishkan to serve as a protective barrier between the Mishkan and the rest of the Israelite camp. This emphasized the holiness of the Mishkan and ensured that no unauthorized person would approach it (Rambam, Hilchot Klei HaMikdash 3:8).
Q: How does this verse apply to Jewish life today?
A: While we no longer have the Mishkan, the principle of designated roles in sacred service continues. Today, Kohanim (priests, a subset of Levites) still have specific duties in the synagogue, such as the Priestly Blessing (Birkat Kohanim), reflecting the enduring legacy of the Levites' service (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 128).
Q: What can we learn from the Levites' dedication to the Mishkan?
A: The Levites teach us the importance of devotion to sacred duties and communal responsibility. Their willingness to serve and protect the Mishkan serves as a model for how we should approach mitzvot and spiritual leadership in our own lives (Talmud, Arachin 11a).
